Just turn up
This is a former Victorian corner shop which has been eco-refurbished and turned into an eco holiday home - www.fairfaxcorner.co.uk. The owners retained existing windows to preserve the old look but fitted interior double glazing and insulation to improve the thermal comfort inside. They also used sheep wool insulation in loft and ceilings, and installed solar hot water system. They buy electricity from 100% renewable energy supplier Good Energy and, whenever possible, use upcycled furnishings and equipment. Guests are encouraged to arrive on bikes or using public transport and to use the local recycling service (provided by St Nicks!), and the house is full of literature on the sustainability theme.
The owners learnt a lot from their experiences of retrofitting an older property, which involved a lot of compromise, and they would do some things differently if they were to start again.
GETTING THERE:
The house is close to the Railway Station and city centre - If you can, please cycle (download York Cycle Map and look at square B3 of the city centre enlargerment), walk or take bus no.7, 11. i-TravelYork can help plan your journey. If needed, on street parking is available if you ask owners for a permit ticket.
